According to the vision of ASEAN Post 2015 Health Development Agenda, ASEAN will be “a Healthy, Caring and Sustainable ASEAN Community.” Its mission statement is “To promote a healthy and caring ASEAN Community, where the people achieve maximum health potential through healthy lifestyle, have universal access to quality health care and financial risk protection; have safe food and healthy diet; live in a healthy environment with sustainable inclusive development where health is incorporated in all policies.”ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) has targeted at enhancing well-being and livelihood of ASEAN people.
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is defined as “all people have equitable access to quality services and have financial risk protection in obtaining health services.” UHC aims at poverty reduction and sustainable development of the developed nations, including low- and middle-income countries.
As one of the ASEAN country members, Indonesia has implemented its national health insurance under one single payer for 60 percent of the population on January 1, 2014 with an anticipation to cover a complete 100 percent of its entire population in 2019, making Indonesia’s national health insurance the world largest in the next few years time with an aim to attain health equity for approximately 250 million people.
Collaborative activities between the Health Sciences Faculty of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta and the Chulalongkorn University College of Public Health (CPHS) Thailand signed on April 16, 2016 on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) resulted in two activities namely the establishment of study center in ASEAN health and collaborative research. The collaborative research was initiated on the topic of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) whose research results were published posters at international seminars in Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and Kyoto University, Japan.
